Is the app free?
Yes — free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. You pay only your AI provider for what you use, and some providers offer free models. What that adds up to: a subscription against your own API key.
Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. The app talks directly to your provider using your key, which is stored in your device's secure keychain.
Which AI providers work?
Any service with an OpenAI-compatible API. The app has one-tap presets for popular providers such as OpenRouter, DeepSeek, and Google Gemini, and you can point it at any other compatible endpoint. New to API keys? Which key to get, and how.
Does it work with my existing character cards?
Yes. LonelyTavern imports standard V3 character card PNG and JSON files, world-info lorebooks, and existing chat histories — conversations you started elsewhere can continue here.
