How to export your JanitorAI chats and characters on Android
The short answer
- JanitorAI has no export. Not chats, not characters, not personas. The only "export" in its changelog is for proxy settings.
- Three routes exist: a data request (official, slow), community tools (unofficial, fast), and copying by hand.
- Back up before you need to. The help center says chats lost in server migrations "cannot be restored."
What you can lose
- Server migrations: lost chats "cannot be restored," and some 2023 to 2024 chats still await migration. (Help center)
- Site instability: messages sent during an outage are gone; chats that look empty usually return. (Changelog, user reports)
- August 2026 memory bug: chat memory emptied on about 15,000 chats, most later restored. (Changelog)
- Bot deleted, privated, or moderated: your existing chats stay readable, but no new chats, and the definition is gone. (Help center, user reports)
- Creator deletes their account: unresolved; reports go both ways. (User reports)
- Your account terminated: JanitorAI "may delete your account and User Content." (Terms, section 10)
Route 1: the data request
The privacy policy grants "a copy of your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format." Email [email protected] and ask for a full export including chats, characters, and personas.
- No turnaround is published.
- You get a ZIP of JSON: profile, chats with per-message roles and timestamps, characters, personas, comments, media.
- It is a data dump, not an import file. An AI model can convert one chat to the Tavern chat format in one request.
Route 2: community tools
Extensions and userscripts that save your chats from the browser exist, several open source and maintained in 2026. We name none; choose one whose source you can read and check its last update.
- What they export: chats, often straight to the Tavern chat format; cards, some as standard PNG; personas, lorebooks, swipes.
- Android: yes. Firefox for Android runs extensions and, with a userscript manager, userscripts. Kiwi Browser is discontinued; ignore guides that name it.
- The terms: they do not mention scraping; that quote comes from lookalike domains. They do bar "automated systems, bots, or scripts to access the Platform without authorization" and harvesting "user data without consent." We found no report of a ban for saving one's own chats. The risk is yours.
- Why tools break: site changes, not enforcement. Expect to update or replace one.
- Hidden definitions: a creator who hides the definition and disables the proxy has made the card unexportable. Respect that. Your chats are still yours to save.
Route 3: by hand
- Chats: select, copy, paste into a text file. The web app copies cleanly.
- Personas: text fields in your settings.
- Your own characters: every editor field is copyable, and the fields match the card format by name: personality, scenario, first message, example dialogue.
Continuing elsewhere
Import apps read the Tavern chat format: one message per line, with speaker and text. A tool that wrote it gives you a finished file; the data-request JSON or a pasted transcript needs one conversion request to an AI model. Cards in PNG or JSON import directly; lorebooks import separately.
Also leaving Chai, Character.AI, or Talkie? Each has its own guide.
About the model
- JanitorAI free: JLLM, about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens of context.
- janitor+: $12.99 a month for five times the context.
- JanitorAI with your own key: a proxy to OpenRouter or DeepSeek, 16,000 tokens recommended.
- Bring-your-own-key apps: the same key and the same models, with the chats on your phone. The app is free, and OpenRouter's free models cost nothing.
Where we'd take it
LonelyTavern imports Tavern chat history, character cards, and lorebooks, connects to any OpenAI-compatible provider under your own key, and keeps everything on your phone. Free, no account, no ads, 18+.
